Forgotten soles at London Fashion week

Mark Fast’s show at London Fashion Week (SS10) was full of vibrant creativity. It was obvious that a vast amount of man hours and raw talent were utilised to put together all the designs, particularly the fabulous knitwear. But these were not written about in the media. All the talk was about the ‘plus size’ models he had used (‘plus’ meaning a very average 12-14).

Obviously clothes need to hang correctly on a model, and need to be walked down the catwalk with the right height and stride. But the models used in this show were second to none; all the plus size models were absolutely stunning, and their curvaceous figures really showed off the knitwear garments.

But something else they were wearing was not mentioned - the shoes.

It’s well known by all girls that heels give you a better posture, make you look much taller and generally slimmer, which is why they make most girls feel better. The shoes used in the Mark Fast show were Louboutins - a huge favourite among celebrities and on the wish list of probably every girl.

Christian Louboutin helped to bring stilettos into high fashion at the end of the 1990s. His shoes are known for the skyscraper heels he creates, generally being 5-6 inches long, sometimes higher if you’re daring enough. His goal is to “make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as long as she can.” The signature red sole is Louboutin’s trademark - it won’t be only you who knows you are wearing a pair, but everyone else too (and not to mention the fact that people will know you paid £500 for them!)

So why weren’t the shoes mentioned as an issue in the show? Because these beauties look special on all women - size zero or not.

Shoe size does not reflect your weight, which is probably why shoes are not mentioned as much in the media after London Fashion Week. With the progression of new season’s styles and key looks, it means any girl, any size, can buy into any trend. Having such a vast range of shoe designs on the catwalk and the high street, means high fashion is more accessible to every girl. The models on the Mark Fast show - plus size or not - all looked fabulous in their heels.
