Sex in the City style

Hit TV show, Sex and the City has sparked international fashion trends, with women everywhere clamoring to imitate the characters quirky, high-fashion style.

So when it comes to the style stakes, who do you consider yourself to be like? Downtown hippy chic Carrie Bradshaw? Or more preppy, uptown, Park Avenue princess Charlotte? Are you an androgynous career girl like Miranda or are you more of a punchy power dresser like man eating, party girl Samantha Jones? Whatever your choice, we’ve got the lowdown on the hottest new year’s look for you.

Carrie Bradshaw

At the mere mention of sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw, instantly a world of glamorous luxury designer heels spring to mind. Carrie has an entire room dedicated to her gorgeous heels, so if you want to capture her style, but can’t quite afford to spend your rent money on the latest addition to your wardrobe, look no further for our round up of won’t-break-the-bank glamorous Carrie inspired styles.

Leave the practical black heels in the wardrobe this year and instead add a splash of colour. In true Carrie style step out in a pair of heels decorated with a gorgeous corsage. They’re guaranteed to brighten up a dreary January day!

Or, if you’re feeling sexy in the bedroom and want to try something new then a pair of seriously seductive fluffy marabou mules (http://www.sexyshoes.co.uk/caress-401f.html) are for you. Carrie slipped these on for Berger in the 4th series to eliminate the ‘Sexpectation’ (sex with a new partner that sucks instead of sizzles). And, finally, with the help of the marabou shoes, the other shoe dropped…..! Watch as the sparks fly between you and your lover once you slip on these fabulously furry shoes!

Charlotte York

Charlotte usually embodies a sweet preppy style, whether she’s holidaying in the Hamptons, at a restaurant on a date or hanging out with the girls. Her outfits are always accessorized by a cute but sophisticated bag and shoes combo to complete her elegant style. Charlotte always looks well put together, without appearing too contrived.

So, if you don’t have Park Avenue pocket money to play with, but love Charlotte’s cute and classic style don’t despair and think you have to slum it in the style stakes. Choose elegant and sophisticated pieces, such as neutral peep toe heels and a matching clutch and look for subtle detailing, that adds interest but isn’t over the top. A pair of cute button detail boots, ideally in cream and black work extremely well for a classy but casual look, perfect for a spot of shopping or schmoozing at the art gallery a’ la Charlotte. All you need is a flattering cable neck sweater to ooze Park Avenue chic.

Fashion: The best and worst of 2009

Fashion: The best and worst of 2009

Best Trends of 2009

Built-in Platform Sky High Heels — We cannot tell you how happy we were to say goodbye to dancewear inspired ballet flats and hello to fun sexy, sky high heels.

Bold, Chunky Jewelry — What first started in all the major runway shows has now hit stores like H&M, making this signature couture look available for all non-millionaires like us! These fun, over-sized pieces are great to match with a plain white shirt or any dress for an instant outfit uplift.

Stockings — Stockings are one of the best trends this season because it has allowed us to carry some of our great summer pieces into the fall and winter. Whether you’re wearing a tunic, long tee, chunky knit sweater or even under seasonal party dresses, stockings instantly glam-up any look!

Over-the-Knee Boots — There’s no denying this phenomenon of over-the-knee in 2009. All major retailers have jumped on this bandwagon, and with good reason! OTK Boots are great to wear over jeans, leggings or stockings. For an instant evening look, try a pair on with this season’s party dresses.

Celebrity Collaborations — We’re not saying all celebrity collaborations were great this season (we’re still recovering from the Lindsay Lohan/Ungaro disaster), but the ones that were done right were amazing! (Thanks, Kate Moss/Top Shop, Jimmy Choo/H&M!)

Worst trends of 2009

Fringed Heels — Fringe is best left on other accessories: dresses great, Moccasins awesome, boots fine, jackets OK, but stilettos? Some things are better left untouched.

Harem Pants — There’s only one thing to say about this MC Hammer inspired trend: “Can’t touch this.”

Guys in Low V-neck Tees — We have American Apparel to thank (or curse?) for this trend. We’re sorry, but some things are just left best to the imagination (even if you are Ed Westwick).

Ed Hardy/Affliction Shirts — Every time someone mentions Ed Hardy or Affliction, an image of Jon Gosselin enters our mind ... or of some over-tanned idiot in the club getting drunk.

Thigh-High Boots — Over-the-knee boots are great, thigh highs ... not so much. Unless you’re Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, you should leave this look to the ladies of the night.

Your request is being processed... Michelle Obama Ordered Thigh-High Boots From France

Viva la France!, in the Obama household, at least. AFP is reporting that Michelle Obama has ordered two pairs of boots from French shoemaker Robert Clergerie: "A black pair with flat heels as well as another pair of calf-length boots in soft beige buckskin, both in size 41 (US size nine-and-a-half, British size seven)." Clergerie said that one of the styles was slightly changed at Michelle's request, an accommodation he's used to after working with Madonna, Bianca Jagger and French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

The Obamas have previously waved their French fashion flag high, with Sasha and Malia wearing Parisian label Dino E Lucia in the First Family photo.

High heels afflict Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has previously called her feet "the bane of my life" -- and not just because of her obsessive compulsion to toss away millions on shoes, shoes, and more shoes. According to U.K. paper the Daily Mail -- and more than a few icky close-up photos of Beckham's dogs -- the world's most fabulous footballer's wife has a raging case of bunions.

"She is suffering from shooting pain from the bunions," a snitch told the paper.

Naughty or nice?

Are you on Santa’s naughty or nice list this year? Will you be a Christmas angel or are you desperate to leave your halo at home for a night? Whether you’re good or bad this season, we’ve got a hot new look for you this winter.

Goody two shoes

Even if you’re feeling saintly this doesn’t mean your outfit has to be boring. Whether you’re off to a family gathering, or meeting the in-laws for dinner, you’ll want to dress to impress. When you think of good girls, Charlotte from Channel 4’s best loved show, Sex and the City, automatically springs to mind. She shows that s Park Avenue princess doesn’t have to be prissy with her pretty, feminine style.

Take style inspiration from the past and look to imitate fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, and Jackie O with their elegant, lady-like style. The high street is awash with good-girl chic, from beautifully cut classic shift dresses, stylish 50’s prom dresses and Chanel inspired suit separates. Accessorise your dress with a cropped tailored jacket, elegant leather gloves and endless strands of pearls. Finish your sophisticated 50’s Park Avenue princess look off with a killer pair of heels. Peep toes, ankle straps or anything with a cutesy bow is perfect.

Good girl gone bad

If you feel like making a scene and showing off your bad side this winter, it’s never been easier. Nothing screams bad gal like leather. However, in the past wearing leather may have made you look more like a member of Hell’s Angels than high class haute couture hottie. Enter the sexy, strapless, boob-tube leather dress. It’ll help to give you instant bad ass sex appeal. Sex up your leathers with bad ass killer heels. A death defying spike heal is best, and will make your legs look seriously sculpted. Choose from either bondage inspired, studded stiletto’s complete with wrap around detailing or if you’re feeling really bad, a kinky pair of thigh highs. All you need now is a studded cuff, collar or fingerless leather gloves. A slick or red lippy and dark, rouge-noir talons complete your look. Bad girl attitude optional.

Socks AND high heels! Britney Spears shows she hasn't got a clue how to dress stylishly in winter

The unseasonably cold weather in is causing something of a fashion nightmare for some of the usually well groomed celebs.

On Tuesday, Cher stepped out looking like Captain , bundled up in a huge hat and scarf against the cold.

Now and have added to the collection of poorly turned out U.S. stars, who are clearly not as used to wrapping up warm (or stylishly, for that matter) on that side of the Atlantic.

Britney Spears

Walking into a fashion trap: Britney Spears went shopping yesterday in Los Angeles, bundled up against the unseasonably cool weather in a dodgy poncho

With below averages temperatures for this time of year (hitting a low of 8C today), Britney was spotted yesterday sporting a dodgy woollen spiderweb-patterned poncho.

With a grimace on her face, the 28-year-old singer stalked along Robertson Blvd, showing off a flash of unflattering white sock beneath her chunky high heels.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry stepped out for lunch at Chin Chin Grill in West Hollywood, dressed in a striped woolly hat, which clashed with her blue hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms.

At one point the singer held her hand over her face as she tried to avoid being photographed in her scruffy ensemble.

Anyone heading for Los Angeles this winter might also want to avoid taking any style tips for the cold weather from Cher.

Looking less like an international superstar and more like The Pirates of the Carribean's Jack Sparrow, the singer was unrecognisable as she bundled up against the cool climate on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old superstar left her Los Angeles home to go Christmas shopping dressed in fur-lined boots, a big parka coat and a thick multi-coloured scarf which she wrapped around her face.

Shopping: But she looked more like Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow than an international celebrity

She and a friend headed into Beverly Hills where they stopped at department store Barneys , where a pair of long black boots caught her attention.

In true celebrity style, she kept her dark black sunglasses on but ditched the big coat as she warmed up during her spending spree, showing off a trim figure in snug velour tracksuit bottoms and a tight hot pink vest top.

Still without her coat, she dashed out to her stretch limo but battled with her scarf as she tried to pull it back over her face again.

Cher then visited a day spa for some pampering before heading to LAX International Airport where she flew off to by private jet.

Christmas Fashion Guide: Part 2

The very thought of having to brave the shops in the run up to Christmas, takes precise military planning. You can make the experience as pleasant as possible, through the careful selection, of the right outfit.http://www.sexyshoes.co.uk/images/news/festive-fashion-guide2.jpg

Flat shoes are a must have and as tempting as it may be to pile on thick socks to block out the cold, with a cosy pair of boots, remember that shopping centers can be hot and humid at the best of times, let alone during the run up to Christmas. Open flats are the way to go, as they provide just the right amount of ventilation because let’s face it, who wants swollen feet come the end of a shopping trip from hell!

Bulky, heavy outdoor clothing is best left in the car. Alternatively, why not let him do the carrying?

For those of you who will be joining your family at the carol service, remember that church can be a little chilly, particularly in the height of winter. Keep your toes toasty with a pair of low heeled ankle boots. Pair with a smart, but casual bootleg jean and cosy chunky knit jumper or a jumper dress with cable knit tights.

See the New Year in with style. This is your opportunity to shine. Wear you glammest party dress, and craziest accessories. You could even wear that special lipstick you’ve been saving for a special occasion. Make the boys go all-of-a-flutter with false eyelashes and complete your look with a touch of glitter dust for that festive finish. Why not compliment your glittery eyes with sparkly platform stilettos for super sex appeal. Ps. remember your gel cushions if you want to dance into the small hours of January 1st……

It's official: High heels hurt

Science has confirmed what most women know: High heels hurt your feet.High heels

Foot doctors have long noticed that women who wear higher heels tend to complain of more foot pain, and warned against sporting spike heels. Now a study shows that the higher the heel, the more pressure wearers put on the ends of mid-foot bones that connect to the toes.

For the study, male and female volunteers had pressure readings taken as they stood with their heels on wooden blocks ranging from one to two inches high. The higher the block, the more pressure the volunteers put on the ends of their metatarsal bones, which could lead to the pain and foot injuries some high-heel wearers suffer.

To limit problems, the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society suggests people wear shorter heels — preferable under 2 inches — and try to save high heels for special occasions where you won’t be on your feet for long stretches of time.

Shoes News! Jimmy Choo is coming to town!

It’s not so much handbags at dawn, more sexy shoes, at dawn as the countdown to owning a £50 pair of Jimmy Choo’s gets closer. On the 14th November Swedish high street chain H&M launch their designer range of luxury Jimmy Choos at bargain prices. As the date gets closer, it’s thought that thousands of savvy shoppers will queue over night to snap up the best deals.http://www.sexyshoes.co.uk/images/news/jimmy-choo_b.jpg

The first 160 shoppers in stores at 9am on Saturday 14th will have a wristband placed on them and will be allowed to spend just 10 minutes in the store’s VIP area and will be corralled around in groups of 20.

However, fanatical shoppers will have to exert self control and resist the urge to do a crazy Christmas trolley dash as the store is limiting shoppers to purchasing just 1 pair of Choo’s, in 1 size only. Harsh it may seem, but this is to ensure as many people as possible get a slice of the delicious Jimmy Choo pie.

The measures have been put in place to avoid chaotic stampedes and arguments this season like the ones which have happened at stores like Topshop’s launch of their Kate Moss collection as well as at the opening of Primark’s flagship London store.

Shoppers will be able to step (literally) into the shoes of celebs such as Cate Blanchett, Cheryl Cole and Beyonce at a mere fraction of the cost. The cut price range consists of glamorous high heels, luscious strappy party shoes, skyscraper stilettos, perfect pumps, and ground defying platforms. You can also snap up a selection of chic ankle boots, kinky knee highs and seductive thigh skimming boots. With so much choice how’s a gal supposed to choose just 1?

Shoes News!

Katie Price aka ‘Jordan’s new lover, Alex Raid, apparently has a shoe fetish! The former Hollyoaks hunk turned cage fighter revealed his feminine side this week as he unveiled his obsession for dressing in women’s clothing. Whilst out partying at a classy Kent establishment, the notorious Amadeus nightclub for a pal’s birthday, Reid beckoned over 20 year old lap dancer Lucinda Griffin. Reid then plied the busty brunette with champagne only to spill the details on his kinky closet habits.

Reid told her she reminded him of a younger Katie, but whilst most other blokes in the club couldn’t take their eyes off Lucinda’s bountiful cleavage, Reid’s interest was located more than a little below the belt; precisely at the end of the leggy lovely’s lustrous legs, firmly on her £180 black diamond stilettos to be exact. He even made her take off the 6 inch killer heels for him to have a good and proper look at.

Griffin was out partying for a friend’s birthday in a Moulin Rouge theme get-up consisting of a black basque, complete with breasts spilling out over the top, stockings and kinky platform stiletto’s. But Reid brushed over the topic of her body and moved quickly onto her clothes and shoes instead.

‘Alex told me he loved dressing up as a woman and was really into women's clothes and especially their shoes’ (Griffin) - The Sun 2009. Though the lap dancer offered to take him home, he simply wouldn’t stop referring to his alter ego ‘Roxanne’ which could be more than just a tad off putting for even the most determined gal!

Reid admitted things were tough with Katie. Maybe the former glamour model has banned her cage fighting boyfriend from playing dress up for just too long. Or maybe she’s kept her closet firmly closed whilst he’s been around. Who knows? Jordan’s infamous penchant for fairy tale dresses and shoes is enough to excite a small child let alone a fully grown, cage fighting, cross dressing man. Let’s just hope he doesn’t raid his missus’s make up collection. Alex Reid taking make up tips from Jordan??! The world is simply just not ready!

Pointed Toe Shoes Guide

“Pointy toe shoes – as long as I am not wearing them, they really look good.”

This sentiment is not voiced by one or two women; almost all women feel the same way. Most women feel that pointed toe shoes are sexy but will not suit them. If all women think like this, we will never be able to see the elegance, the style, and the grace of pointed shoes in our country.

Pointed Toe Shoes in the UK – Are they Hot or Not?

When it comes to some shoes, it is impossible to say if they are hot or not. This can be said for the trend of pointy toe shoes in the UK, America, and Canada. While some women don pointed toe shoes and look majestic in them, some still hesitate to buy them. The reason pointed shoes are not very popular is because they are not just another ordinary pair of shoes.

Many women do not dare to look different and hence strictly avoid distinctive shoes like pointed toe shoes. Pointed shoes are not regular shoes that are seen to adorn the feet of common women at the supermarket, your workplace, or at the dentist’s. Most likely when you go to a party or club, you will see one and may be if you are lucky, two elegant women in pointed shoes.

Pointed shoe are normally pointed towards the toe and hence also known as Pointed toe shoes. Though we may say sexy pointed shoes are the latest fad, they have been long existent in fashion. Ballet dancers wore pointed toe shoes for Point work as long back as 1795. This dance form had been so popular that more and more pointed shoes were demanded. Pointy shoes were fondly named “flying machines” as they allowed dancers to perform difficult jumps and dance steps.

The desire to make ballet dancers look graceful and weightless and to allow them to remain on the tip of their toes for longer periods gave birth to pointed toe shoes. There have been many changes in the style and pattern of pointed shoes from then to now. The latest design of pointed toe shoes is courtesy of the early 20th Century ballerina, Anna Pavlova from Russia.

High heels are ladder to self-confidence, business woman says

High heels are ladder to self-confidence, businesswoman says

High heels

When Suzanne Fetting sees women shuffling down sidewalks in heels way too high for them, it makes the confidence coach crazy.

"Instead of lifting their feet up and planting them gracefully, they do a little thing called shuffling," says Fetting, a former runway model. "It drives me nuts."

And if they aren't dragging their feet forward, they wear the heels the way they wear running shoes. "They don't have that sexy sway that you get when you activate the hips," she says, adding you have to do that if you wear five-inch stilettos.

Fetting, who'll be speaking this weekend at the West Coast Women's Show in Abbotsford, has a closet filled with five-inch stilettos. She adores high heels. She has Fluevogs, Iron Fists, and lots of other styles. At five-foot 10, she already towers over most women, but she likes the feeling heels give her.

"I know when I put on high heels, I feel more confident," she says.

After years of watching Vancouver gals wobbling along in their heels, Fetting decided to take matters into her own hands. She set up a business called High Heel Appeal and offers classes to anyone who wants to learn how to strut her stuff like a runway pro. Why?

"I really want to make this city sexier," she says.

The lessons are a fun sideline for Fetting whose other business, Absolute Confidence, helps women develop confidence in all aspects of their lives. While she will sell her new High Heel Appeal DVD this weekend at the West Coast Women's Show in Abbotsford, her true purpose is to share her seven steps to absolute confidence with attendees. She says that while confidence is essential for every aspect of life, many women only experience it in a limited way.

To develop authentic confidence, women must develop relationships with themselves and not look to others for validation, she says. They also need to let go of the past.

"So many women focus on the should-haves and could-haves and guilt," she says. "But you will never get to a place of confidence if you keep thinking about the past all the time."

The 9th annual West Coast Women's Show, at Tradex in Abbotsford this weekend has eight different exhibit zones, including the brand-new Careers and Opportunities Exhibit Zone focusing exclusively on employment, education, investment and networking. Other highlight zones include the expanded Home and Interior Design Zone and the Worlds of Taste Zone.

How to Wear High Heels

High heels are an instant way to inject a bit of sex appeal into any outfit. They make the legs look longer and more shapely and the bottom more pronounced thereby enhancing a woman’s naturally gorgeous figure. High heels just make you look and feel are whole lot more sexy.

However, as every woman knows, high heels can sometimes be painful to wear. A couple of hours after slipping them on, many women develop aching feet, throbbing toes and sore arches. We at Sexyshoes adore wearing high heels too and often share this pain and discomfort. This is why we have come up with some useful tips to make high heels even more of a pleasure to wear:

1. Choose the right size

Statistics show that around 19% of women wear the wrong size shoe. In the short term, high heels that are too small will pinch and rub the skin raw; in the long term, they can permanently damage your feet. High heels that are too big on the other hand will rub and make walking difficult causing ankle and leg pains. No-one feels sexy with bunions, corns or swelling and these are just some of the problems ill-fitting high heels with cause.

2. Wear new shoes in

New high heels whether leather, patent, PU or rubber need to be worn in to soften them and to make them fit comfortably to your own feet. Although there are shoe-stretching sprays available on the market, the easiest and cheapest way to shape high heels to your feet is to wear them around the house. Start off by wearing thick socks to stretch them out. Wearing your new high heels at home will not only help them fit comfortably but will also get you used to wearing them; try practising your sexy strut whilst doing the hoovering!

3. Buy shoes with soft inner soles

Lucky for us party girls the footwear industry has realised that we sometimes need a hand to last all night in our favourite high heels. A range of gel pads and insoles is available helping us dance all night in our stilettos and platform heels. If you find the balls of your feet or your heels begin to throb or burn in high heels then buying an insole or cushioning pad is definitely a smart investment.

4. When possible wear socks with shoes?

Socks or tights will help prevent your feet from rubbing against the shoe and will save you the heartache of getting blisters and corns. Fashion-forward ladies know that platforms and wedges look hot with ankle socks especially if you dare to mix bold colours. Tights are a definite must in the chillier months and go with anything from boots and court shoes to stilettos and stack heels. For those of us looking forward to the weather turning warmer but are still not too keen on totally baring our limbs, fishnets are a great way to make pins look flawless and still give your feet some protection in high heels.

5. Take time to get used to wearing High Heels

Rome wasn’t built in a day and no lady can expect to instantly turn into Marilyn Monroe the minute she slips into a pair of high heels. The sexy sway of the hips and the elegant poise takes a while to cultivate and believe it or not, was actually something young ladies were taught in finishing schools; so if you can’t master it straight away don’t despair. Spend time at home wearing your heels and then when you feel confident wear them on a night out. Although we here at Sexyshoes don’t condone heavy drinking, a little bit of alcohol will help you deal with any potential discomfort.

6. Be prepared to take things more slowly in high heels

Women who wear flats can run for buses, race up stairs and easily hop on and off buses. However, those of us in high heels need to take things a little more slowly. Running for buses is risky, walking fast causes foot ache and don’t even think about racing up the stairs two at a time. So just bear that in mind, high heels make you look more lady-like and they also require you to act more lady-like too. But not to worry, at the end of the day you’ve always got your trusty ballet pumps or comfy trainers in the wardrobe if you fancy a day off!

How to Choose High Heels

High heels are every woman’s number one fashion accessory but with so many different types available, choosing a pair of high heels can often seem overwhelming. You have to think about the colour, the material, the style, the height and the finish. If all this information is making you feel like you need a lie-down in a dark room, fear not! High Heel shoes uk is on hand to help you choose the perfect pair of high heels.

Tip 1. First things first; where are you planning to wear these fabulous new high heels? This will help you decide the colour and style of shoe you want. If you plan to wear them to work something with a low heel and in a subdued or neutral colour is advisable but if they are for clubbing or nights out you can go for metallics, glitter and acid brights.

Tip 2. The shape of the shoe and heel are important in terms of both comfort and style. Pointed stiletto high heels are more difficult to wear and tend to suit people with narrow feet and a slender build. Wedges and platforms are more comfortable to wear and help things look balanced and proportional.

Tip 3. Make sure you get shoes that fit properly. High heels can put a lot of pressure on the feet so getting the size right is crucial. Blisters and bunions are definitely not attractive! Never buy a pair of high heels without trying them on first. When you are in the shop, stand up and walk around in them. If there are any problems you will feel it straight away. If the shoe wobbles when you stand up, that’s a bad sign. If you can’t even stand in the heels, how can you expect to walk in them?

Tip 4. Spend time walking in your high heels at home before you wear them out. Your feet will need to get used to them slowly especially if they are high or strappy. Try wearing them for about 15 minutes then take a break. When you’ve got the confidence (and ability!) to wear them outside, start off wearing them on short trips. Remember to swing your hips too; high heels require a little bit of sauciness in your strut. And also try to shorten you stride and slow down your walking pace. And definitely no running for the bus!

Tip 5. As gorgeous as high heels look, long-time use can cause damage to the feet, knees and back. To prevent this from happening minimise the amount of time you spend in high heels and try to carry a pair of flats with you when possible. When you are finished wearing your heels, spend a few minutes massaging your feet - concentrating on the ankles and the arches. This will loosen any muscles that might have tightened thereby preventing future aches and sprains. Foot spas and regular pedicures are also a great way to keep your feet looking good and feeling happy.

Tip 6. Don’t run before you can walk and don’t wear stilettos if you’re a high heel virgin! Take it step by step; start off with low boots or shoes with good ankle support and a solid heel. Once you are comfortable with those, you can try something higher. Remember an elegant walk in a low pair of court shoes is infinitely sexier than an ungainly totter in a pair of spike heels.

Tip 7. Always take into account your outfit when choosing which high heels to wear. I know this advice may sound trite but heels can really make or break an outfit. Knee-high boots look great with jeans but team them with a short skirt and bare legs and the effect is tacky. Ankle boots are versatile and trendy and suit anything from trousers and jeans to shorts and pencil skirts. Court shoes again can be worn with most outfits but be careful when wearing them with trousers; too much height in the heel can transform your chic jeans into unflattering ankle swingers.

Tip 8. Remember girls, socks are your friend! Recent fashion trends have shown that socks can look fabulous with anything from stilettos and platforms to peep-toes and ankle boots. Over-the-knee or ankle, glittery or block colours; socks will compliment your high heels and keep your feet comfortable.

500 days of wardrobe envy

If you’ve been drooling at the mere sight of the wardrobe of Hollywood lovely Zooey Deschanel, you are not alone. The petite all round performer was born into the Tinsel Town elite to Irish-French parents; Academy Award-nominated cinematographer and director Caleb Deschanel and actress Mary Jo Deschanel, who blessed their daughter with natural good looks and style sensibilities. Deschanel is the epitome of dark haired, blue-eyed Irish beauty, complemented by the delicate features, elegance and grace beautiful French women are renowned for. 500 days of wardrobe envy

She was the perfect choice of clothes horse in hit quirky offbeat romantic comedy of the moment, 500 Days of Summer. Working an eclectic vintage mix of kooky cute, she manages to strike the balance just right and doesn’t appear too dated, contrived and put together like many other stars. She exudes freshness and spontaneity, in a wardrobe which induces pure style envy.

Be inspired by The Smiths There is a light that never goes out, and capture the essence behind the sound that so perfectly encapsulates the films retro-whimsy 50’s chic look. Work a wardrobe of laid back 50’s glamour, Summer’s style is a little Sandra-Dee, but edgier.

Accessorise with classic Chanel-esque accessories; pearl strands are teamed with ribbons and bows, to keep a youthful, playful edge that stops the look appearing too stuffy. Top off your outfit with monochrome pumps or lady like round-toe heels for evenings, complete with frosted nude pink lips.

Its pussy-bow blouses, preppy-cool by day and glam nipped in waists, floral print, unstructured prom style dresses by evening. Add a nude coloured pashmina, a vintage bow waist belt and a soft leather clutch, and you’re set to go. It’s vintage-chic at its best, casual without being sloppy, cute without being sickly sweet.

Raid vintage and charity shops for that true authentic retro feel and rifle through flea markets. You can’t get this look off the peg as it requires skilful hunting and imagination. London’s infamous Portobello Market and Camden Lock are good places to start if you’re after the slightly worn-kooky vintage-chic that’s just oh-so-now this season.

The Polaroid Camera goes to the great scrapheap in the sky

It marks the end of an era. The last ever piece of Polaroid film has been given its expiry date, and afterwards never again will we hear the familiar whir and click of the camera with its 60 second ‘instant’ image popping out the bottom. The Polaroid, sadly, was doomed the moment digital cameras became affordable and easily accessible for consumers.

However, to mark the use by date and consequent demise of one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, the Atlas Gallery, London is holding an exhibition in tribute of the Polaroid. Titled ‘Polaroid Exp 09.10.09’ it will bring together great British artists and fellow Polaroid devotees such as Andy Warhol, Marc Quinn and Helmut Newton.

The Polaroid Camera goes to the great scrapheap in the sky

Collectors can purchase some of the art at the exhibition as a tribute to the magic that was the Polaroid. Newton’s infamous Polaroid piece ‘Big Nude’ will sell for a £ 5,000-£8,000, a snip considering the traditional piece of film is worth a staggering 180,000. The fashion photographer who has been earmarked as changing the fashion image forever with his ‘porno-chic’ style has expressed his love for his choice of media; ‘It’s a wonderful sketchpad, the Polaroid. Polaroid’s often contain a freshness and spontaneity that is lacking in the carefully planned final shots on what I call real film’.

The colour-blind photographer is notorious for his monochrome black and white postcard-esque photographs featuring naked Amazonian women, wearing nothing but vicious stiletto heels in exotic locations. His images were very much focused on the women’s extremely long legs and killer stiletto heels, often cutting out the rest of the body. Though some found the nudity shots somewhat shocking he loved to push visionary boundaries and consequently has produced some of the most stunning fashion shots in history. His surrealist photography not only shaped fashion photography but even fashion itself.

Deemed one of the greatest visual artists, Katie Grand, fashion director of The Face and editor of Pop magazine credits him as her inspiration and ‘the best photographer ever’. Such was his love and focus on stiletto heels Newton even produced a monochrome piece titled ‘Self-portrait in high heels’ A bizarre image of himself, a long legged man reclining in LA patio poolside luxury. Wearing a serious expression, stiletto court shoes and oversized tilted hat this legendary fashion photographer was never afraid to break with convention and as a result produced some of the most ground breaking fashion imagery.

The Polaroid began its journey in the late 1930’s when Edward Land was questioned by his young daughter whilst on a family holiday; ‘why can’t we look at the pictures straight away?’ Land spent the next two years experimenting with a number of chemical combinations to discover the right solution which allowed him to produce developing self-developing camera film, which peeled away from the negative in under a minute. In 1948 The Land Camera Model 95 was born and within a year more than a million packets of Polaroid instant film were sold.

But fear not loyal Polaroid fans; a group of dedicated Polaroid enthusiasts and ex-employees named ‘The Impossible Project’ is currently in the process of renting an old factory in Holland and aims to reproduce Polaroid’s magical film by the end of the year! So plenty more girls on film for years to come. Hoorah!

Lady GaGa: Going Gaga over the 80s

Lady GaGa

As autumn approaches, it seems like we just can’t escape from the imminent 80s revival explosion! Girls, dust off your leggings and leotards and let us lead you by the shoulder pads through one of autumn’s hottest trends.

Lady GaGa is getting into the groove and is loving the 80s revival. The kooky songstress feels that fashion and music are intertwined and combines these passions by designing and making her own outrageous costumes.

The New York born fashionista has a multitude of talents: she’s a singer, go-go dancer, DJ and even a seamstress. Previously known for making her own clothes, she now has her own design collective comprising of her and her friends, aptly titled ‘The House of GaGa’. She embraces a no-holds-barred approach when it comes to her crazy couture, inspiring women worldwide to experiment with their look.

Love her or hate her, the flamboyant singer never fails to draw attention to herself with her glitzy attire. She’s said to model her look on the iconic 80s original Material Girl, Madonna. She pays tribute to her idol with a variety of obscure pointy dresses and lots of spangly leotards, crazy oversized head bands and big hair pieces.

Her dress sense is incredibly, futuristically out there, and yet it seems other celebs as well as her adoring public are starting to sit up and take notice of the bonkers starlet. Paparazzi loving heiress Paris Hilton has been taking some bizarre fashion tips from the pioneer of space age chic and has attempted to step into GaGa’s shoes.

Paris wowed audiences from a balcony in Malibu with her bondage-esque get up. She could easily have been mistaken for the Quirky Queen herself, as her outfit was completed with a number of fetish-like strap restraints. A razor sharp bright blonde bob complete with full blunt fringe and dark futuristic Ray-Bans sunglasses accessorised the look perfectly. To finish off the GaGa get up, Paris strutted, pouted and posed in some ground defying shoe boots which are a must have staple in the GaGa closet. GaGa has been seen working her show-stopping shoe boot collection at a number of events, never failing to wow audiences.

Shoe and ankle boots are a must have accessory to finish off any outfit and are a perfectly fitting tribute to GaGa’s darling decade of choice. They are perfect for making the awkward transition between autumn and winter just that little bit easier.

The shoe boot is perfect for all occasions. Come rain or shine, it won’t let you down. This versatile style piece of footwear genius will compliment any outfit. Team with bright patterned tights, a dress, cropped jeans, your skinnies, hot pants or for the really brave out there with GaGa balls of steel, shimmy into a spangled leotard! Work those boots hard girls - day, night and all between!

Sex and the City is back!

The rumours are gleefully true! New York’s most fabulous foursome are back and are tottering their way to a screen near you from May 28th next year. Filming has just begun on the eagerly anticipated sequel to last summer’s blockbuster; which is rumoured to have netted an estimated $415 million across the globe.

Fashionistas worldwide are rubbing their perfectly manicured hands together in glee at the prospect of devouring stylist Patricia Fields upcoming range of eclectic and beautiful fashion gems. The stylist, infamous for her unusual fashion sense, has become a household name thanks to her impeccably dressed Sex and the City stars.

Fields’ strength lies in her penchant for quirky accessories and the ability to think outside the box. When it comes to fashion, she’s miles ahead of other costume stylists. She has an impeccable eye for putting together unique combinations that somehow just work. She can manipulate even the most conventional outfits into the most striking and beautiful pieces of artistry. She never fails to add a stunning twist to the girls’ wondrous wardrobes.

Think of Miranda’s lawyer-esque working wardrobe, or Carries wedding dress complete with bird head dress. Her artistry makes even the most accomplished stylist look last season and leaves the rest of us mere mortals trailing way behind, furtively trying to recreate her inventive, one-of-a-kind, ensembles.

Red headed actress Cynthia Nixon, who plays single working mum Miranda Hobbs in the hit Channel 4 show feels that ‘the clothes are like another character in the show. They help make it real.’ The series has a cult following, with fans trawling stores and the internet to snap up the fab fours’ biggest must-have items. The show has catapulted shoe designers Christian Louboutin, Monolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo to iconic status thanks to Carrie’s love for their shoes.

She simply goes weak at the ankles for their designer beauties and cannot resist their allure. She’s gone to all kinds of extremes to maintain her shopping habit, maxing out credit cards and blowing rent money on her designer addiction. She’s even voiced humorous concern towards her obsession, once calling herself the ‘woman that literally lived in her shoe’ when she realised that she had no money to secure a loan for her flat. She defended her infatuation by saying ‘It’s really hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes, that’s why you need really special shoes.’ Her shoes are almost like decoration as she lovingly gazes into their boxes. Some never make it out, and some are for reminiscing. Never the less we can all thank Carrie (not forgetting Patricia) for inspiring women worldwide to strut their stuff in some really fabulous shoes. And for that, we salute you!

Victoria razzle dazzles New York New York!

When someone mentions shiny thigh high boots it will often summon up images of strippers and ladies of the night, not the latest must have accessory for respectable women everywhere for autumn/winter 2009.

Number 1 fashionista and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham grabbed the limelight with a double whammy, wearing two different pairs of stunningly show stopping thigh highs over one weekend. Mrs B was spreading the news of her astute fashion sense by donning this season’s key style statement in New York - the town that doesn’t sleep.

Posh was at The Bergdorf Goodman Store for a New York fashion week event entitled ‘Fashion’s Night Out’ held by Vogue editor Anna Wintours. Posh couldn’t fail to turn heads in her daring ensemble. It seems she may have taken the events name more seriously than the other guests; she was pictured standing next to girl next door Sienna Miller who was just wearing jeans. Vicky B outshone all, even the Vogue hostess herself who only wore a simple t-shirt.

Never one to shy away from attention, Mrs Beckham’s head turning outfit was a blast from the past. She waved goodbye to her conservative signatory style for the weekend and instead embraced true WAG couture in an animal print corseted dress, and most importantly, shiny thigh high PVC boots.

Victoria’s prized possessions caused a storm of response; perfect considering the aspiring fashion designer was also in town to launch her fashion collection, as well as her signatory perfume.

Not content with wowing the crowds just once, later at her own perfume launch, Victoria showed she had another trick up her fashion forward sleeve. Pushing the style stakes even higher, she worked the red carpet in gravity defying £3,300 Antonio Berdardi heel-less thigh high’s! Mr Beckham was even called on for support, lovingly propping up his wife by the bottom. “Think she’s gunna need it,” a spokesman for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy said. ‘If (Mrs B) was to wear this sort of style for anything more than a short red carpet walk, she could suffer from foot pain, ankle pain, knee pain, spinal pain and neck pain on a permanent basis.’ But let’s face it, most women would put up with a little pain if they could have the scrumptiously delicious David Beckham walking down the red carpet (or even the isle) holding them up!

Whats Hot for autumn 2009

Hot – Stiletto’s are back! Time to practice walking like a lady again. One hot style this season is the hybrid of the platform and the stiletto. This sexy shoe features a ‘hidden’ platform at the front of the shoe with a super tall stiletto heel. They are relatively versatile; swap your work shoes for a pair of these and you’re ready to strut your stuff out on the tiles.

Hot – The colour purple. This jewel tone is a lovely alternative to the reliable but ordinary choice of black. An easy way to add a splash of colour to a dreary outfit, jewel tones were awash all over the catwalks this season, all across the board from the likes of Karen Millen to Prada.

Hot – Fringing. No longer confined to the Wild West, there are lots of styles out there with added fringe benefits. Don’t think you have to swagger around John Wayne style, think more Pocahontas. There are plenty of feminine fringe styles cropping up on the high street. La Roudette and New Look both carry a range varying from tan ankle boots to platform heels and sandals. Designer fans of fringed footwear include Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gautlier.

Celebs like Mischa Barton have been spotted rocking out in fringed boots and if it’s good enough for an OC princess, it’s good enough for us too. Team with jeans for laid back cool, or with dresses to make your summer wardrobe see you through till autumn. Accessorise with quirky socks pulled up out of your boots, pull them right up or have them just peeking over the top. Anything goes.

Hot – Biker Boots. Agyness Deyn and Daisy Lowe have been rockin’ out in biker boots for some time now but they are something to watch out for in autumn 2009. Throw on with almost anything for that laid back eclectic look. Think hippy, boho babe at Glasto; messy hair, smudgy eyes and ditzy dresses. These boots provide a tough masculine edge to girlie outfits. These boots will also help keep your feet toasty and dry when the weather turns bad. Fling on some layers to keep you snug when the temperature drops and you’re out the door.

Hot- Ankle boots. Any kind of ankle boots or shoes will be bang on trend this season. Platform soles and chunky heels will be everywhere. Choose patent, crinkled leather or suede materials in a two tone design for extra credibility.

Mark Fast unravels a brighter future for the fashion industry at London Fashion Week

Canadian born fashion designer Mark Fast caused a wave of controversy at London Fashion Week by choosing to send ‘Plus size’ models down the runway. The girls who modelled the designer’s famous crocheted creations were from the +12 agency. Hayley Morley, 21, a size 12, Laura Catterall, 20, a size 14, and Gwyneth Harrison, 25, a size 12-14, paraded his knitted dresses as Fast felt the need to prove that curvier girls can also wear his creations.

Fast's managing director was quoted as saying: ‘We wanted women to know they don’t have to be a size zero to wear a Mark Fast dress - curvier women can look even better in one.’ –The Telegraph 09. However, it seems somewhat ironic that a size 12 is considered a plus size when the average dress size for a woman in the UK is a size 16...

It is somewhat of a breakthrough though for the fashion industry which has been heavily criticised for only using waif-like size zero models to showcase designer collections on catwalks worldwide. Medical experts fear both girls and young women try to emulate their emaciated idols resulting in an ever growing trend in the number of women suffering from severe eating disorders. Despite the tragedy in 2006 of 2 South American models dying from crippling eating disorders, there are still no medical guidelines in place for models. This is despite the fashion industries meagre attempts to regulate the health and welfare of its models, launching The British Fashion Council’s ‘Model Health Enquiry’ in 2007.

It is questionable as to how the size 0 phenomenon started, and it seems it may all stem from the designers. It has been speculated that using plus size models (size 12) is seen as cheapening a label and making it look somewhat down-market. British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman has even gone to the length of writing to designers asking for larger sample sizes last June in a bid to combat the engrained thin is beautiful mantra. Many designer clothing samples often don’t even fit the most established models.

Despite Fast’s wishes to embrace curves it seems his stylist Erika Kurihara wasn’t so happy about the decision. She walked out before the show blaming it on ‘creative differences’. Later she was quoted as saying that ‘two of the plus size models did not have the right walk for the catwalk’ - The Sun 2009.

Is the right walk for the catwalk a strange and jerky gazelle like strut, pelvis pushed forward, looks like the model is being operated by a remote control device, kind of walk? Those of a healthy body weight would find this desired catwalk strut near impossible to imitate.

Let’s hope Mark Fast continues to be a pioneering designer who continues to lead the way for other designers to follow in his fashion forward thinking steps. May he carry on creating designs for a realistic and healthy array of models to show off on the catwalk and in the media for young women and girls alike to aspire to instead of the emancipated stick thin bodies we have globally become so accustomed to.
